The tropical lagoon is full of life

Every year more than 600 million people travel the world, especially to tropical coastal areas

These coasts are a biological paradise and home to coral reefs, known for the amazing beauty of their animal and plant life. Reefs are the ocean’s richest marine environment. They contribute to the world’s fishing resources and are the most effective barrier against strong waves and even tsunamis.

The current boom in tourism however has weakened coastlines, and a more responsible approach to using this paradise is needed for the future – 30% of the world’s reefs have been destroyed and nearly half are endangered.

The Mangrove

Mangrove swamps, a type of ecosystem that is vital to the oceans and planet, are also found in the tropics. Located near beaches and river estuaries, mangrove tree roots, which retain mud, also serve as nurseries. Thousands of animal species come here to lay their eggs and the hatched young return to the reef when they reach adulthood. Mangrove swamps are the most productive sites of biomass on Earth.

Deforestation, the draining of swamp lands, urban development and tourist facilities all contribute to the destruction of mangrove swamps. Because of the impact they have on all forms of life, mangrove swamps are now better protected and partially replanted.
