World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day logo 8 June is World Oceans Day! In fact, the United Nations General Assembly first designated 8 June as World Oceans Day in 2009.

With the encouragement of the Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts and Islands, the founders of the World Ocean Network including Jean-Michel Cousteau and Philippe VALLETTE had been lobbying delegations from various countries and United Nations organisations to obtain official approval for the World Oceans Day on 8 June since 2003. The UN approval was obtained in 2009. Hundreds of participants and partners in the Network, including Nausicaa, the French National Sea Centre in Boulogne-sur-Mer, now celebrate World Oceans Day every year.
