A marine knowledge sharing platform to bring together responsible research and innovation communities
Funding Programme: Horizon 2020 Programme of Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Union
Project Coordinator: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Italy
Duration: 01/05/2016 – 30/04/2019
The MARINA collaborative project aims at engaging in responsible marine research and innovation.
It federates European researchers, businesses, policymakers, research funders, citizens, and science communicators keen on working out solutions to marine challenges, based on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and consequently building the Blue Society.
In particular, MARINA helps to better identify the needs of the society and the topics for future research, innovation and governance in fisheries and aquaculture, sea transportation, deep-sea mining, pollution caused by human land and sea pressures, marine and coastal tourism, marine biotechnologies, renewable energies and marine changes caused by climate.
To this end, MARINA has put in place Mobilisation and Mutual Learning workshops, policy events, a knowledge sharing web platform, a travelling exhibition and good practice guidelines.
MARINA Mobilisation and Mutual Learning Workshops
Coordinated by Nausicaá, 45 local and international Mobilisation and Mutual Learning (MML) workshops have brought together over 1,000 actors in 13 European countries. By using participatory workshop facilitation methods, MARINA created a forum for debating, sharing knowledge and best practice, and proposing effective action plans to bring about economic and environmental sustainability through Blue Growth.
The results of the workshops have been published on the MARINA platform, shared with likeminded initiatives and discussed at marine and RRI national and international events.
Nausicaá has hosted workshops on sustainable aquaculture, maritime and coastal tourism, and marine biotechnologies.
The MARINA knowledge sharing platform is an all-inclusive collaborative networking website. It is a place for sharing knowledge and tools based on the Responsible Research and Innovation principles such as public engagement, science education, gender equality, open access, ethics and governance.
MARINA Travelling Exhibition
The MARINA interactive travelling exhibition will help visitors understand the importance of the world’s ocean and how responsible marine research and innovation can unlock its potential without jeopardising the resources for future generations. It will showcase how our daily lives benefit from the treasures of the sea, whether we live on the coast or in the hinterland. A special focus is given to marine biotechnologies, deep-sea mining, sea transportation and marine renewable energy.
The exhibition will be launched in the science centre AHHAA in Estonia in September 2018. It will open in Nausicaá in February 2019.
MARINA conference : “SCIENCE, INNOVATION AND BLUE SOCIETY : our engagement for the ocean”.
Nausicaá will host the conference “SCIENCE, INNOVATION AND BLUE SOCIETY : our engagement for the ocean” on March 12, 2019. It is the final conference of the MARINA project, and it will bring together European researchers and scientists working on marine resources management and conservation.
