Mankind and Shores – Area 11 : Tropical lagoon
The coral reefs and tropical lagoons are paradisiac shelters for marine biodiversity. Hundreds of tropical fish decked in shimmering colours live here together, creating a stunning spectacle.
The worldwide fishing activity draws on this very dense population. The coral reefs provide natural and effective protection against waves and tsunamis. The necessity to protect these areas is now widely accepted.
But the coasts continue to be endangered by surges in tourist activity and threatened by overfishing: 30% of the reefs have already been destroyed, and nearly half of what remains is in danger.
