Seal, sea-lion or pinniped?

Sea-lions belong to the otariidae family which is part of the pinniped clade. That's why we use both terms when talking about our five sea-lions at Nausicaa!

Seals are also pinnipeds but belong to the phocidae family. They are very similar but it is easy to tell them apart:

First of all, seals do not have ears, or actually you can't see their ears!

Secondly, if you’re lucky enough to see them on land, you will notice that the seal crawls, while the sea-lion walks on all fours. Its larger front-flippers provide more support on the ground.
